Moonrise: A Revolutionary Approach to Urban Parking

LAFA's School of Industrial Design Introduces Projection Parking Space

The Moonrise, a projection parking space, is a unique solution to the lack of parking spaces in urban areas. Inspired by the limitations of downtown spaces and the high cost of urban land, this innovative design is a beacon of hope for congested cities. The Moonrise is not just a parking space; it is a symbol of adaptability and ingenuity in the face of urban challenges.

What sets the Moonrise apart from other parking solutions is its adaptability. It is suited for roads, streets, squares, spaces before buildings, and other special surroundings that are bustling during the day but relatively deserted at night. The municipal administration controls the projection considering real traffic flow. The projection line can be recognized in all kinds of road conditions, even when snow covers the surface.

The Moonrise is a product of innovative technology, combining LED projection and solar energy to achieve self-supply energy, intelligent control, and autonomic electric timing. The design specifications are Width 570mm x Depth 1100mm x Height 6100mm, making it a compact and efficient solution for urban parking.

The design team, consisting of Xue Wenkai, Sun Jian, Chen Mo, Du Heli, and Li Junxi, has worked tirelessly to bring this concept to life. The project started in April 2016 in LAFA Communal Facility Design Studio and was completed in February 2017 in National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Industrial Design in LAFA.

The Moonrise is a response to the international issue of parking difficulties that plague urban traffic. As a powerful supplement to regular parking spaces, it plays an irreplaceable role in regulating vehicles and relieving traffic jams, thus improving parking efficiency. The projection parking line can disappear when it's not the correct time for parking, avoiding misrecognition of the time-limited real-line parking space.

The design faced challenges, particularly in formulating a suitable shape for the projector. After numerous sketches and selection of exteriors, the team found the proper way for the projector, achieving the desired effect. The Moonrise was recognized for its innovative approach and was awarded Silver in A' Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design Award in 2017.
